CHORUS: Lest I forget Gethsemane; Lest I forget Thine agony; Lest I forget Thy love for me, Lead me to Calvary. 2) Show me the tomb where Thou wast laid, Tenderly mourned and wept; Angels in robes of light arrayed Guarded Thee whilst Thou slept. 3) Let me like Mary, thru the gloom, Come with a gift to Thee; Show to me now the empty tomb, Lead me to Calvary. 4) May I be willing, Lord, to bear Daily my cross for Thee; Even Thy cup of grief to share, Thou hast borne all for me. THOUGHTS Memorial Day weekend was coming up, and the nursery school teacher took the opportunity to tell her class about patriotism. "We live in a great country," she said. "One of the things we should be happy about is that, in this country, we are all free." One little boy came walking up to her from the back of the room. He stood with his hands on his hips and said. . . . "I'm not free. I'm four." M M M M M M M M M M M M M M "This month's "Court Jester" Award goes to U.S. District Judge Jennifer Coffman, who agreed with the American Civil Liberties Union that a Kentucky school's display of The Ten Commandments, the Mayflower Compact, the preamble to Kentucky's Constitution, the national motto, "In God We Trust," and the Declaration of Independence, violates the erroneous notion of a First Amendment separation of church and state. The documents were on display as historic documents attesting to the importance of religion in America. Memo to Ms. Coffman: These words appear on the wall of the Jefferson Memorial -- "God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God?" Does the memorial need to come down?" And have you looked at anything from the U.S. Mint lately? (The Federalist,5/19/00) M M M M M M M M M M M M M M THE UNLEAVENED STRONG HAND MARK McWHORTER In Exodus 13, we read about God instituting a memorial for the Israelites that would help them remember coming out of Egypt. God wanted them to remember that God had brought them out of bondage. He used the words "by strength of hand the Lord brought you out." The Israelites were not to eat leavened bread for seven days. At the end of seven days they were to have a feast. They were to only eat unleavened bread. In fact, they were not to even be seen with leavened bread during those days. In verse 9, God tells them this is to remind them that " with a strong hand hath the Lord brought thee out of Egypt." Today Christians partake of the Lord's Supper. Part of the Lord's Supper is the unleavened bread. This bread represents the body of Christ (Matthew 26:26). It represents His body given on the cross for our sins. Christ is also on the Right Hand of God (Mark 15:62). When one sat on the right hand of a king one was actually considered the right hand of the king. So in a way Christ is being pictured as the right hand of God. Christ brings us out of the land of sin and death when we obey Him and are baptized. He makes us free from sin (Romans 6:18). So in a way, Christ is the strong hand of the Lord that brought us out of sin. And thus, we can remember this every time we partake of the unleavened bread of the Lord's Supper. It is remarkable that God gave a forepicture of Christ as our Saviour in the memorial that He instituted in Exodus 13. M M M M M M M M M M M M M M Nowadays, many Americans have forgotten the meaning and traditions of Memorial Day. At cemeteries across the country, the graves of the fallen are sadly ignored, and worse, neglected. - Allen West Memorial Day has become just another day offices are closed and we have a picnic or go to the lake. How much more have Christians forgotten the meaning of the Lord's Supper. So many times people say that it is a celebration of Jesus life, or perhaps the resurrection, but that is not what the Bible teaches. In 1 Corinthians 11:23-28 Paul makes it clear that the death of Jesus is what is being remembered during the Lord's Supper. E. 1 Corinthians 11:23-29 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: [24] And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. [25] After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. [26] For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come. [27] Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. [28] But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. [29] For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. L. S. - THE LORD'S MEMORIAL HELPS US . . . I. LOOK BACKWARD A. Every memorial has this goal. We are a forgetful people. B. Joshua 4:5-9 And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of Jordan, and take ye up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel: [6] That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones? [7] Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever. [8] And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the LORD spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto the place where they lodged, and laid them down there. [9] And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests which bare the ark of the covenant stood: and they are there unto this day. C. Lord's Memorial is for remembrance (I Cor. 11:23-25) D. To some degree, every memorial can accomplish this end E. NO GREATER LOVE This story deserves to be shared. "It was February 1941, Auschwitz, Poland. Maximilian Kolbe was a Franciscan priest put in the infamous death camp for helping Jews escape Nazi terrorism. Months went by and in desperation an escape took place. The camp rule was enforced. Ten people would be rounded up randomly and herded into a cell where they would die of starvation and exposure as a lesson against future escape attempts. Names were called. A Polish Jew, Frandishek Gasovnachek was called. He cried, "Wait, I have a wife and children!" Kolbe stepped forward and said, "I will take his place." Kolbe was marched into the cell with nine others where he managed to live until August 14. This story was chronicled on an NBC news special several years ago. Gasovnachek, by this time 82, was shown telling this story while tears streamed down his cheeks. A mobile camera followed him around his little white house to a marble monument carefully tended with flowers. The inscription read: IN MEMORY OF MAXIMILIAN KOLBE HE DIED IN MY PLACE. Since 1941, every day, Gasovnachek has lived with the knowledge, "I live because someone died for me." Every year on August 14 he travels to Auschwitz in memory of Kolbe." This beautiful story reminds us that everyday since we reached the age of accountability and of knowing Jesus, we have lived with this same thought - we live because someone died for us. Paul said, "The love of Christ controls us, having concluded this, that one died for all, therefore all died; and He died for all, so that they who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf" (2 Cor. 5:14-15) We don't walk out into our backyard and see a monument or take a journey to a far away place to remember his sacrifice. We come into the assembly and take a spiritual journey around the table with Jesus and remember His sacrifice for us. Lonnie Davis, Southwest Church of Christ, Richmond, Virginia II. LOOK INWARD A. Many memorials strive to get us to reach inside ourselves and become better because of that which they symbolize 1. Vietnam war- unpopular with many. Memorial sought to unite a people who were divided. - Joshua 22:27-28, 34 2. WWII - greatest generation, encourages us to be more like them. B. Other memorials (slavery, holocaust, etc.) mark times of upheaval in our society and bid its observers learn lest they inherit the doom of repetition. C. Each time go to a cemetery, should think of ourselves and think about that coming time for us D. Lord's Memorial calls for introspection (1 Cor. 11:27-29) E. Many memorials can accomplish this end with certain degree of success- cause introspection F. Susan Herzog story - VIA Kneemail - Mike Benson Susan Herzog was 18 when she was killed on New Year's Day 1982 Kevin Tuna, her killer was 17. so his case went to juvenile court. where he was convicted of manslaughter and drunken driving. Louis and Patricia Herzog filed a $1.5 million suit against Tunell, but settled for $936, to be paid $1 at a time to remind Tunell what he had done to their daughter. Tunell, now 26, keeps missing his payments. The Herzogs keep taking him to court. He was sentenced in Fairfax County Circuit Court in Fairfax, Virginia, to 30 days in jail for contempt because he has not lived up to his agreement to make the weekly payments. Tunell testifying that he is haunted by Susan Herzog's death and tormented by the payments which are due each Friday, in the amount of $1, because Susan died on a Friday. They began in 1982 and were to end in 2000, — one year for every year Susan lived. From the witness stand, Tunell offered the Herzogs two boxes of checks covering payments until 2001, one year more than required. They refused. THOUGHT: Christians partake of the Lord's Supper every Sunday so that they will not forget the sacrifice Christ made for them. This follows the pattern set by the early Christians. Eusebius, a church historian born A.D. 270, wrote, "Christians assembled on the first day of the week, called by them, the Lord's Day, for the purpose of religious worship, to read Scriptures, preach, and to celebrate the Lord's Supper." How can one forget when he is reminded every week...? [John Gibson, "Amazing Grace," Keynoter, April 12, 1990, p. 2.] KneEmail 0186: "For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup. you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes" (I Cor. 11:26; cf. Acts 20:7). III. LOOK FORWARD A. Many memorials seek to attain some future benefit 1. i.e. Look for some better time to come 2. Hope for some greater moment in the future B. Example- Tombstones; many mention something of some brighter day C. In the terrible circumstance that made the need for such a memorial a reality, there is the hope that there will come a better time when the toss itself will be insignificant D. However, no other memorial can accomplish such, no memorial has hope of such without the substance symbolized by the Lord's Memorial 1. Matthew 26:26-28 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. [27] And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; [28] For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. 2. 1 Corinthians 11:26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come. E. Without the promise of Jesus, there would be no hope for man. Conclusion 1. In His memorial, the Lord wants us to look backward and remember, look inward and consider and look forward and hope. 2. Gasovnachek's memorial could make him remember the deed of Maximilian Kolbe every day- but could never offer him hope for eternity 3. The Herzogs' requirement of their daughter's killer could make him reflect on her death (retrospect) regularly and cause him to become better because of it (introspect) 4. The Lord's Memorial accomplishes what none other can- it helps us to look upward. 5. 2 Peter 3:12-14 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? [13] Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
