W W W W W W W W W W W W W When we think of being separate from the world, also known as sanctification, we might be tempted to be like the boy who was being taught about being good. His mother was teaching him about the bad things he should stop doing and the good things he should start doing. After the teaching was done she encouraged him to pray to ask God to help him do better. The boy was eager to please his mother so he prayed and asked God to help make him a better boy, but then finished by telling God to not worry about it if He couldn't make him better right away because he was having fun living like he was. SPIRITUAL HEALTH REGIMEN - WEEK 76 SEPARATION - 1-19-14 to 1-25-14 SCRIPTURE - 2 Corinthians 6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, COMMENT - God calls on us to be separate from the world and one of the ways that we do this is by not being associated with anything unclean or sinful. We have to come away from things that are sinful. SONGS - WHERE LIVEST THOU? Where livest thou? In pleasures of the world? Or in that realm whence Satan's darts are hurled? Choose now to follow with the sons of God; Far better this man where the great have trod. Where livest thou? In malice and in strife? Where darkness veils and mars the righteous life? Choose now to make a living sacrifice ‘Tis better thus; for we belong to Christ. Where livest thou? There is a place to stay ‘Tis in the Christ, the true and living way! Within His kingdom labor while you may; Here what he says, in loyal trust obey. A NEW CREATURE Buried with Christ, my blessed Redeemer, Dead to the old life of folly and sin; Satan may call, the world may entreat me, There is no voice that answers within. CHORUS: Dead to the world, to voices that call me, Living anew, obedient but free; Dead to the joys that once did enthrall me- Yet ‘tis not I, Christ liveth in me. Think it not strange that things I once cherished Cannot allure me or charm as before; For in the flesh with Christ I have suffered Old things are passed, I love them no more. Dead unto sin, alive thru the Spirit, Risen with Him from the gloom of the grave, All things are new, and I am rejoicing, In His great love, His power to save. Sin hath no more its cruel dominion, Walking in "newness of life," I am free - Glorious life of Christ my Redeemer, Which He so richly shareth with me. THOUGHTS An artist asked a friend to his studio to see his latest painting. He came at the time appointed, but was shown into a dark room. There he waited fifteen minutes. Finally the artist came in, greeted him cordially, and conducted him to the studio. Before he left, the artist said laughingly, "I suppose you thought it queer to be left in that dark room so long?" " Yes I did." "Well," said the artist, "I knew that if you came into my studio with the glare of the street in your eyes, you could not appreciate the fine coloring of the picture, so I left you there until the glare had worn out of your eyes. Today we are blinded by the glare of trivial realities. "If thou knewest," describes our lack of spiritual vision. We fail to recognize Christ and the priceless gift which he offers. We ask many things of God. But how often do we ask for the most precious gift of all? The presence of Jesus removed the glare of the street from this woman's eyes at the well. -Will L. First, the pilgrims wore clothes with such kind of raiment as was diverse from the raiment of any that traded in that Fair. The people, therefore, made a great gazing: some said they were fools. . . bedlams. . . outlandish men. Secondly, . . .few could understand the language of Canaan, but they that kept the Fair were the men of this world, so that they seemed barbarian each to the other. Thirdly, . . .these pilgrims set very light by all the wares sold in the Fair, they cared not so much as to look upon them, {but} looked upwards, signifying that their trade and traffic was in heaven. W W W W W W W W W W W W W When a person becomes a Christian, he usually undergoes some radical life changes, especially if he has had an immoral background. Through the first steps of spiritual growth and self-denial, he gets rid of the large, obvious sins. But sad to say, many believers stop there. They don't go on to eliminate the little sins that clutter the landscape of their lives. Gordon MacDonald, in his book Ordering Your Private World, told of an experience in his own life that illustrates this truth. "Some years ago, when Gail and I bought the old abandoned New Hampshire farm we now call Peace Ledge, we found the site where we wished to build our country home strewn with rocks and boulders. It was going to take a lot of hard work to clear it all out....The first phase of the clearing process was easy. The big boulders went fast. And when they were gone, we began to see that there were a lot of smaller rocks that had to go too. But when we had cleared the site of the boulders and the rocks, we noticed all of the stones and pebbles we had not seen before. This was much harder, more tedious work. But we stuck to it, and there came the day when the soil was ready for planting grass." - Our Daily Bread. W W W W W W W W W W W W The idea of sanctification, being set apart for God, is described in the difference of attitude that a Christian has. Before becoming a Christian he was a sinner running to sin, but after obedience to the gospel he becomes a sinner running from sin. GET OUT OF THE WORLD AND INTO CHRIST A. ROMANS 6:3-4 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? (4) Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. B. GALATIANS 3:26-27 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. (27) For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. II. GET THE WORLD OUT OF YOU AND CHRIST INTO YOU A. It is easier to cry against one-thousand sins of others than to kill one of your own. - John Flavel. B. COLOSSIANS 3:5-10 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: (6) For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: (7) In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. (8) But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. (9) Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; (10) And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: STAY AWAY FROM THE GOD DAMNED THINGS C. 2 CORINTHIANS 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? III. GET OUT INTO THE WORLD WITH CHRIST A. MATTHEW 5:13-16 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. (14) Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. (15) Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. (16) Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. B. EPHESIANS 6:14-15 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; (15) And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; C. GALATIANS 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. IV. GET THE WORLD INTO CHRIST WITH YOU A. ACTS 28:28 Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it. B. 2 TIMOTHY 3:15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. C. TITUS 2:11-12 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, (12) Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; D. JOHN 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. CONCLUSION A. When I was a child, I often had a toothache, and I knew that if I went to my mother, she would give me something which would deaden the pain for that night and let me get to sleep. But I did not go to my mother--at least not till the pain became very bad. And the reason I did not go was this: I did not doubt she would give me the aspirin; but I knew she would also do something else. I knew she would take me to the dentist the next morning. I could not get what I wanted out of her without getting something more, which I did not want. I wanted immediate relief from my pain; but I could not get it without having my teeth set permanently right. And I knew those dentists; I knew they would start fiddling about with all sorts of other teeth which had not yet begun to ache. Our Lord is like the dentists. Dozens of people go to him to be cured of some particular sin. Well, he will cure it all right, but he will not stop there. That may be all you asked; but if you once call him in, he will give you the full treatment. - C.S. Lewis. B.
