Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y The Scriptures have been translated into more than a thousand languages by many worthy organizations. The Word of God lends itself well to this necessary and wonderful work. It is interesting that while we in the United States speak of loving the Lord with our hearts', Others do not use the same words. The Karre people of French Equatorial Africa say that they love Him with their ‘livers'. To the Conob Indians of Guatemala true love is to love with their ‘stomachs', and the Marshall Islanders in the South Pacific with their ‘throats'. But do all these different words in the various languages distort the message? Not at all. In each tongue they are synonymous with the sense of the original. Jesus did not think hearts, livers, stomachs or throats were enough. He commanded not only the emotional love, but intellectual, spiritual, and physical love as well so that we are completely in love with our God. SPIRITUAL HEALTH REGIMEN - WEEK 79 LOVE GOD WITH ALL - 2-9-14 TO 2-15-14 SCRIPTURE - Mark 12:30 "And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment." COMMENT – The overriding theme of the Bible is God's love for His creation. Our natural response to that love should be our total love and devotion returned to Him. SONGS - LOVE THE LORD 1) Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and all your mind and love all mankind as you would love yourself and… 2) Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and mind and love all mankind. 3) We've got Christian lives to live. We've got Jesus' love to give. We've got nothing to hide because in him we abide. CLARKE (This may seem a bit outdated mentioning Madonna, but you can easily replace her name with many of the popular stars of the day. Many in our culture invoke God's name when it seems to be something that helps them promote themselves even though they live rebelliously.) It is very fashionable today to affirm a relationship with God while denying such a relationship by one's manner of life and conduct. This type of attitude is not new to our age, for Paul said of some in his day, "They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate" (Titus 1:16). How descriptive and relevant are these words as they relate to the attitudes and actions of the men and women of our day. Stars and celebrities from the film and music industry have helped to spread the notion that a right relationship with God is enjoyed by simply professing to know him. I shall never forget catching a glimpse of a music awards program several years ago on television. "Prince," a popular rock star who is well known for filthy lyrics in his songs and sexually suggestive music videos, was coming to the microphone to express his gratitude for the award he had just received. As he gave his acceptance speech he said, "I just want to praise God tonight." I practically came out of my chair in disbelief. As if he could hear me, I said aloud, "If you really want to praise God then clean up your music and your life." I was reminded of Titus 1:16 as I listened to his words that night. Here was a man that professed to know God and yet he denied such by his manner of speech and conduct. Those who truly want to please and praise God are careful to let no corrupt speech proceed out of their mouths (Eph 4:29). If "Prince" were truly interested in honoring the real Prince of Peace and Lord of life, then he would keep His commandments (John 14:15). Madonna is another classic example of one who professes to know God while denying such a profession by her wicked deeds. Her wearing of the crucifix does not fool God into believing that she truly loves his Son who died upon that instrument of death. Madonna once said she wore the crucifix because it was sexy due to the fact that a half-naked man died upon it. Several months ago a spokesman for Madonna appeared on one of the morning talk shows attempting to convince the viewing public that Madonna is full of faith and extremely religious. How in the world can people be so warped in their sense of what it means to know God? The answer is found in the last phrase of Titus 1:15--"their mind and conscience are defiled." Madonna denies the very thing she affirms by the deeds she performs. By her works she denies God, being abominable, disobedient and unto every good work reprobate. God could well say of many today, "This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me" (Matthew 15:8). Knowing God is more than mere lip service and wearing a gold cross on a chain around our neck. The words of 1 John 2:3-6 clearly define what it takes truly to know God, "And hereby do we know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him and keepeth not his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked." Prince, Madonna and other entertainment figures are certainly and sadly not the only ones who affirm their love for God while denying that very affirmation by the way that they live. Political leaders often affirm a strong faith in God and the Bible and then turn right around and enact policies which are diametrically opposed to God and His word. If these men truly know God, they will honor His teaching on all subjects, including abortion and homosexuality. Yet, by their works they deny Him and practice disobedience and abomination under the guise of love for God and religious freedom. Entertainer Garth Brooks expressed support for homosexuals and said that this was so hard to do because of his love for the Bible. Thus, he denies the very thing he affirms. If he truly loves the Bible as he claims to, then he will believe what it teaches about homosexuality (Rom 1:18-32; 1 Cor 6:9-10). Finally, it must be admitted that even some members of the Lord's church are guilty of affirming their love for God while denying it by their actions. They profess to love God with all of their heart, soul, strength and mind, and then fail to attend all of the services. They sing that they want to be workers for the Lord and then spurn every opportunity afforded unto them to prove it. We must realize that God sees through all of our hypocritical masks and knows how we really feel about Him (Psalm 33:13-15; Heb 4:13; John 2:24-25). Instead of wearing a gold cross around our necks, let us bear the cross we have been called by Christ to bear (Luke 9:23). Rather than denying God by our works, let us deny ourselves (Mat 16:24). Let us never be guilty of denying what we affirm. Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y LOVE GOD WITH ALL YOU'VE GOT I. THE HEART IS FULL OF _________________ II. THE SOUL IS ___________________ III. MIND IS FOR ________________ IV. STRENGTH IS ___________________ LOVE GOD WITH ALL YOU'VE GOT: A CURE FOR LAZINESS INTRODUCTION: A. Mark 12:28-30 "And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all? {29} And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: {30} And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment." B. Not only is laziness or slothfulness a sin, it can also lead one into other sins. 1. Covetousness 2. Theft 3. Lying C. We need to find the causes of laziness and the areas of life it affects so that we can rid ourselves of its influence. We find in the above verse the cure for laziness, a love for the Lord. We also see the areas of life that need to be cleansed of this rottenness. I. "WITH ALL THY HEART" -THE HEART IS FULL OF FEELINGS WE OFTEN THINK OF OUR FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS WHEN WE THINK OF THE HEART. LET US USE IT AS A SYMBOL FOR THE EMOTIONAL PART OF OUR BEING AND THE EMOTIONAL BONDS WE HAVE TO OTHERS. A. Relationships between parents and children. 1. (Eph 6:1-4) Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. {2} Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; {3} That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. {4} And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. 2. David and Absalom B. Relationships between spouses. 1. (Eph 5:22-25) Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. {23} For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. {24} Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. {25} Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 2. Discuss the importance of kindness and complements C. Relationships between friends and extended family. 1. (Prov 17:17) A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. 2. (Prov 18:24) A man that hath friends must show himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother. 3. The second law of thermodynamics applies to relationships. Illustration # 3982 Willed To The Devil A Finnish infidel died and left his farm willed to the devil. The courts, after deliberating on such a ridiculous set of circumstances, decided the best way to carry out the wishes of the infidel was to permit the farmland to grow up in weeds and briars, to allow the house and barn to remain unpainted and to rot down, and to permit the soil to erode and wash away. The court said, "The best way to let Satan have it is to do nothing." - The Bible Friend D. Relationships between Christians. 1. (Phil 2:3-4) Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. {4} Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. 2. (Gal 6:10) As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. 3. I found lots of weaknesses in the American church, and they got to me. Interest in missions? Only casual. A spirit of sacrifice? Not much. A willingness to serve? Only if convenient. A burden for a lost world? Not really. How could I do anything but become cynical. Unfortunately, I did. E. I knelt to pray when day was done, And prayed, "Lord, bless everyone; Lift from each heart the pain, And let the sick be well again." And then I woke again one day, And carelessly went on my way; The whole day long I did not try To wipe a tear from any eye. I did not try to share the load Of any brother on the road; I did not even go to see the sick man just next door to me. Yet once again when every day was done, I prayed, "Lord, bless everyone." But as I prayed to my ear Came a voice that whispered dear, 'Pause, hypocrite, before you pray; Whom have you tried to bless today? God's sweetest blessings always go, By hands that serve Him here below." And then I hid my face and cried, "Forgive me Lord, for I have lied; Let me but live another day, And I will live the way I pray." -- The Bulletin F. (Mat 25:40) And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. II. "WITH ALL THY SOUL" - THE SOUL IS FOREVERMORE - THE SOUL, OF COURSE, IS REPRESENTATIVE OF OUR SPIRITUAL NATURE. AND BEST DESCRIBES OUR RELATIONSHIP TO GOD. A. Prayer 1. (Mat 6:5-7) And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. {6} But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. {7} But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. 2. (1 Th 5:17) Pray without ceasing. 3. Illustration 5796 Mechanical Decision Makers - "I am aghast at the Harwell Thinkometer, which by a system of buttons placed before each member of a group, permits group decisions without the embarrassment of discussion. You press a button, yes, no, or maybe; and the machine calculates the total reaction. "I am aghast at the Dynamucator, which is alleged to be able to teach you through your pillow while you sleep. Without any intellectual effort, you may learn to be an aggressive salesman, or to speak Russian. "I am even more terrified by the Dial-A-Prayer movement, by which a machine performs your devotions for you, and you do not have to make any personal exertion to get in touch with the Deity beyond giving Him a ring." - Robert M. Hutchins B. Study / doctrine 1. (2 Tim 2:15) Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2. (1 Tim 1:3-4) As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine, {4} Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions. rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do. C. Singing 1. (Eph 5:19-20) Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; {20} Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ: 2. (1 Cor 14:15) What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. D. Stewardship 1. (1 Cor 16:1-2) Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. {2} Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come. 2. (2 Cor 8:3-7) For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves; {4} Praying us with much entreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints. {5} And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God. {6} Insomuch that we desired Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also finish in you the same grace also. {7} Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also. E. Morality 1. (Rom 12:1-2) I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. {2} And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. 2. (James 1:27) Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. 3. (1 Tim 5:22) Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: keep thyself pure. F. (Mat 10:38) "And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me." G. Illustration # 5790 - The "Thresher" The nuclear submarine Thresher disappeared on 10 April 1963, bearing 129 men to a watery grave. Poor workman ship and sloppy testing may have led to the loss. Probable cause of the sinking has been pinpointed as the failure of the salt- water piping system that cooled the propulsion machinery. Such a failure would have flooded the submarine and knocked out all electrical power. Before sinking in 8,000 feet of water, the Thresher had undergone extensive overhaul at the Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. But only five percent of the Thresher's salt-water piping system was inspected by the shipyard. Even in that small sampling one of seven inspections showed piping or fittings "below standard." III. "WITH ALL THY MIND" - MIND IS FOR REASONING - THE MIND, OR INTELLECT IS WHAT CONTROLS WHAT WE THINK, KNOW, AND BELIEVE. IT IS ALSO THE MECHANISM BY WHICH WE DETERMINE WHY WE SHOULD OR SHOULDN'T THINK OR DO SOMETHING. A. Believing what you are told without proof 1. (Acts 17:11) "These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so." 2. Illustration 3233 Blindly Following Church An ignorant man was examined on the subject of his faith, as follows: "What do you believe?" —"I believe what the Church believes?"—"What then, does the Church believe?" —"The Church believes what I believe."—"Tell me, then, I pray you, what it is which you and the Church both believe."—"why, truly, sir, the Church and I both believe the same thing." B. Believing others without investigating 1. (Mat 15:13-14) But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. {14} Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. 2. Not only can the lack of integrity kill the individual involved, it can also cut down whole groups of innocent people as well. It was a chilly Tuesday morning, 28 January 1986, when Christa McAuliffe climbed aboard the Challenger space shuttle for her historic mission as the first citizen in space. She was a teacher. I only pray that we learned something about the consequences of getting an "F" in integrity. The weather was cold, but unbeknownst to the rest of the nation a group of engineers was fighting back the hot sweat of worried anticipation. Would the booster seals hold in this kind of weather? Was it safe to launch? Knowledgeable engineers and designers said, "No." Influential executives and planners said, "Yes." -- Integrity C. A lack of desire to seek the truth 1. (Mat 6:33) But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. 2. (John 18:37-38) Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. {38} Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all. D. An unwillingness to study. 1. (Mat 5:6) Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled 2. (2 Tim 2:15) Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 3. Illustration # 5794 Student's Shortcut In Newspaper In the Kansas City Star, an ad in the personnel's column one day had eight words— reprehensible, idiosyncrasy, extrapolate, platitudinous, assiduous, plethora, euthanasia and desiderata. It was signed by a Ronnie Johnson. The editor wondered what was going on, so he sent a young reporter to find Ronnie Johnson. Ronnie turned out to be a high-school sophomore whose English teacher had told the students that she would give an automatic A to anybody who found those eight words in the paper the first semester. - Listen Magazine IV. "WITH ALL THY STRENGTH' - STRENGTH IS FORCEFULNESS - OUR PHYSICAL NATURE MAKES US DISTINCT FROM EVERY OTHER PERSON ON EARTH. SOME OF US ARE STRONGER THAN OTHERS, BUT GOD ONLY ASKS US TO LOVE HIM WITH OUR STRENGTH AND NOT ANYONE ELSE'S. A. Our jobs 1. (Prov 20:4) The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.' 2. (Prov 21:25) The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour. 3. (Prov 18:9) He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster. 4. "Nowadays God helps those who help themselves and the government helps those who don't" B. Our time 1. (Eph 5:14-16) Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. {15} See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, {16} Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 2. TITLE: TIMELY CONFUSION Shortly after he opened his first plant, Thomas Edison noticed that his employees were in the habit of watching the lone factory clock. To the inventor who was an indefatigable worker, this was incomprehensible. He did not indicate his disapproval verbally. Instead he had dozens of clocks placed around the plant, no two keeping the same time. From then on clock watching led to so much confusion that nobody cared what time it was. C. Our willingness to do work for the church 1. (Judg 18:9) And they said, Arise, that we may go up against them: for we have seen the land, and, behold, it is very good: and are ye still? be not slothful to go, and to enter to possess the land. 2. (Heb 6:12) That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. 3. We're all guilty of using excuses. When we do, we place ourselves in the company of great sports heroes. Take Rafael Septien, for example. Rafael Septien has no peers -- when it comes to making up lamebrained excuses for missed field goals. His alibis are as weak as a squibbed kick off the crossbar and as weird as a paisley goal post. After he muffed 4 of 5 field goal attempts against the Houston Oilers on September 29, 1985, Septien didn't rely on the old, hackneyed excuses like "It was a bad snap" or "The holder messed up." Nope, Septien put the blame squarely on his shoulders. He confessed, "I was too busy reading my stats on the scoreboard." Later, when he blew a field goal in a game at Texas Stadium, Septien had a ready explanation: "The grass was too tall." So was his tale of woe. Texas Stadium doesn't even have grass; its surface is artificial turf Once when he shanked a chip shot, he said it was because "the 30- second clock distracted me." Another time, he booted a wounded duck that fell far short of the uprights. His excuse? "My helmet was too tight and it was squeezing my brain. I couldn't think." Septien has seldom blamed anyone else for his messed-up kicks. But once, when yet another field goal attempt went wide, he turned to his holder, quarterback Danny White, and said, "No wonder. You placed the ball upside down." -- From The Sports Hall of Shame What kind of excuses are you making? D. Our sleep 1. (Prov 6:9) How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? 2. (Prov 26:14) As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed. 3. Illustration - Man to his friend: "My brother-in-law leaps out of bed as soon as the first ray of sun touches his window. Of course, his bedroom faces west." E. (2 Th 3:10) "For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat." F. Here is an interesting letter to the editor of the Los Angeles Times concerning work: There has been a lot of criticism of people who do not want to work, especially when they are collecting welfare. Most people prefer to work and that's fine, but others may prefer to sit in the park, go to the beach, or observe the wonders of nature. Now those who dislike working should not be penalized by depriving them of the benefits of our society. There is plenty for all. Everyone does not feel the same way about working. Some have built-in feelings about it that makes it very unpleasant for them to work, especially when it is required. Now this could be looked upon as a handicap. We don't punish others with handicaps. Our society provides for them and should do the same for those with a natural dislike for work. Why can't we live and let live with each to his own style? *Ambition is a poor excuse for not having enough sense to be lazy. *Hard work pays off in the future. Laziness pays off now.
