COMMENT – Adding seems so natural for us it is just a step above counting, in fact, counting is really just adding by one. We need to learn what things should be added and what things shouldn't. And sometimes what order to add things. SONG - THE NINETY AND NINE 1) There were ninety and nine that safely lay In the shelter of the fold, But one was out on the hills away, Far off from the gates of gold; Away on the mountains wild and bare, Away from the tender Shepherd's care, Away from the tender Shepherd's care. 2) Lord, Thou has here Thy ninety and nine Are they not enough for Thee? But the shepherd made answer This of mine has wandered away from me, And although the road be rough and steep, I go to the desert to find my sheep, I go to the desert to find my sheep. 3) But none of the ransomed ever knew How deep were the waters crossed Nor how dark was the night that the Lord passed thru Ere He found His sheep that was lost. Far out in the desert He heard its cry, ‘Twas sick and helpless and ready to die. ‘Twas sick and helpless and ready to die. 4) Lord, whence are those blood-drops all the way That mark out the mountain's track? They were shed for one who had gone astray Ere the Shepherd could bring him back, Lord, whence are Thy hands so rent and torn? They're pierced tonight by many a thorn, They're pierced tonight by many a thorn. 5) But all thru the mountains, thunder-riv'n and up from the rocky steep, there arose a glad cry to the gate of heav'n, rejoice, I have found my sheep, And the angels echoed around the throne, rejoice for the Lord brings back His own, rejoice for the Lord brings back His own. THOUGHTS BENEFITS OF DAILY BIBLE READING DAVE DUGAN, SR. THOSE WHO READ THE BIBLE ON A DAILY BASIS CAN . . . *KNOW that the Bible is not a dead letter (Heb 4:12-13). *KNOW the truth of God's Word (John 17:17). *KNOW and understand the power of God's Word to bring about salvation (Rom 1:16-17). *KNOW about and avoid temptation(Mt 6:13; 2 Pet 2:9; 2 Cor 11:15). *KNOW that your marriage is better by applying the teachings of the apostle Paul (Eph 5:20ff). *KNOW that by reading and applying the following that one is growing spiritually mature in God's sight. 1) Add the Christian graces ... faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, charity, not barren nor unfruitful (2 Pet 1:5-8). 2) Through working as a Christian... to exercise good works (2 Tim 4:7-8), do good works for which the Christian is created (Eph 2:10); literally abounding in the work of the Lord (1 Cor 15:58); being zealous in good works (Titus 2:14); and being prepared to every good work (2 Tim 2:21); thus being the example of good works for others (Titus 2:7). *KNOW that he is drawn near to God (James 4:8). *KNOW that we can fall away if we do not heed the many warnings that are given to us (1 Cor 10:12; 1 Tim 4:1-3; Mt 13:41; 2 Pet 2:20-22; Heb 3:;13; 2 Tim 4:4-10). Preventing our own falling away by not being over confident (1 Cor 10:13). *KNOW that we can keep our body in subjection through our spiritual knowledge (1 Cor 9:27). Daily Bible reading can and will change a person's life if we allow the scriptures to penetrate our hearts (minds) and cause us to make the choices in life that will please God and bring us into an eternal home. Won't you be a daily Bible reader? 1+1=2+1=3+1=4+1=5+1=6+1=7+1=8+1=9+1=10+1=11+1=12+1=13 WHICH IS WORSE? BRENT POLLARD Despite our desire to remain Christians only, there are often "camps" within the Lord's Body that would like to pull us all in to one ditch or another. Our erroneous brethren on the right want to bog us down with things that the Bible never commanded us. Our mistaken brethren on the left want us to let loose of the yoke Jesus gave us and to direct our own course. And the thought that often enters my mind, at least, is which is worse? Well...let's see. In Revelation 22:18,19 we read, "For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book." Hmmm....both liberals and ultra- conservatives like to add to and take away from God's Word. The ultra-conservatives add certain tests of fellowship such as whether or not one eats in the church building, supports other congregations or children's home, and the like. Then, they turn right around and subtract the love we are to have for our brethren. (Sometimes you'll find the ultra-conservative who does not add the tests of fellowship but definitely subtracts the love we are to have for our brethren.) Liberals, on the other hand, like to subtract clear Biblical doctrines concerning salvation and worship while adding the proposition that if the Bible doesn't explicitly condemn something we are free to practice it. Sounds to me like both sides are charting a course that leads to destruction. So, which is worse, a liberal or an ultra- conservative? Neither "a" or "b." They are both wrong. Let me draw your attention to a set of brethren that I would consider to be "worse" than both the extremists on the right and left. There are those within our brotherhood that would have you think they are "balanced" when, in actuality, they are truly spineless! These are brethren that would feel comfortable if they were in an assembly of a congregation guilty of practicing one extreme or the other. Oh, they would have you think that you ought to be more like them. But, the truth is, being the compromisers that they are, they only lend "legitimacy" to both side's arguments. There is a well-known brother, whose name I will not mention, that is loved by both ultra-conservatives and liberals alike. Can you imagine that? Well, I've run into people from both of our brotherhood's "camps" who had heard of the guy, worked with him on occasion, and loved him. Another preacher, familiar with this brother, told me why that was the case. When he entered one type of church, that is what he became. When he entered the other, he would make the necessary transformation to fit in! Love for our brethren does not mean that we overlook blatant error! Sometimes love involves discipline (Cf. Hebrews 12:6). And a true Biblically-minded brother is going to administer that chastening when it is deserved. He will stand up when it is time and he will do what God would have him to do. Failure to do so, results in putting his own soul in jeopardy (Cf. Ezekiel 3:17-21). Why do I think that these compromising "jellyfish" are worse? It all comes down to distinguishing characteristics. You can quickly surmise that a brother is a liberal or ultra-conservative by the way that he would talk and act. One of our so-called "balanced" brothers, though, will do what he can to "sense" what you are, and will act accordingly! Brethren, we do not need to support extremists...but neither do we need to support those who are unwilling to stand with the word of God. Let us do what we can to become Biblical. Let us reclaim our title of "people of the Book" that we once enjoyed when the church was stronger. Let us hold to the Restoration Movement's maxim to "speak where the Bible speaks and to be silent where the Bible is silent." If we do not do so...what will become of the Lord's Body? Personally, I don't like to think of that possibility! SUMMING IT ALL UP INTRODUCTION: A. MOST OF US LIKE ADDING BETTER THAN SUBTRACTING BECAUSE YOU HAVE MORE AT THE END THAN AT THE BEGINNING. B. ADDING IS NOT SUCH A GOOD THING WHEN WE ARE ADDING UP BILLS OR TROUBLES. L.S. - LET US LEARN THAT ADDING IS SOMETIMES SOMETHING. . . I. GOD DOES. A. HE ADDED TO THE CHURCH 1. Acts 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. 2. Acts 2:47 Praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. 3. Acts 5:14 And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women. 4. Acts 11:24 For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord. B. HE ADDED TEACHING AS NEEDED 1. Jeremiah 36:32 Then took Jeremiah another roll, and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah; who wrote therein from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire: and there were added besides unto them many like words. 2. Luke 19:11 And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear. 3. Galatians 3:19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. C. HE ADDS BLESSINGS 1. Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. 2. Proverbs 10:22 The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it. 3. Daniel 4:36 At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honor and brightness returned unto me; and my counselors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me. 4. Genesis 30:24 And she called his name Joseph; and said, The LORD shall add to me another son. 5. 2 Samuel 24:3 And Joab said unto the king, Now the LORD thy God add unto the people, how many soever they be a hundredfold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing? 6. 2 Kings 20:6 And I will add unto thy days fifteen years; and I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake. Isaiah 38:5 Go, and say to Hezekiah, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen years. D. HE ADDS TROUBLES 1. Psalms 69:27 Add iniquity unto their iniquity: and let them not come into thy righteousness. 2. Jeremiah 45:3 Thou didst say, Woe is me now! for the LORD hath added grief to my sorrow; I fainted in my sighing, and I find no rest. II. WE SHOULDN'T DO. A. NOT TO GOD'S WORD 1. Deuteronomy 4:2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish aught from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you. 2. Deuteronomy 5:22 These words the LORD spoke unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me. 3. Deuteronomy 12:32 What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it. 4. Proverbs 30:6 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar. 5. Revelation 22:18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: B. NOT TO CAUSE SUFFERING TO OTHERS 1. 1 Kings 12:11,14 And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. (14) And spoke to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. 2. Philippians 1:16 The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds: 3. Luke 3:20 Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison. C. NOT SIN 1. Deuteronomy 29:19 And it come to pass, when he heareth the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of mine heart, to add drunkenness to thirst: 2. 2 Chronicles 28:13 And said unto them, Ye shall not bring in the captives hither: for whereas we have offended against the LORD already, ye intend to add more to our sins and to our trespass: for our trespass is great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel. 3. Isaiah 30:1 Woe to the rebellious children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin: 4. 1 Samuel 12:19 And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for thy servants unto the LORD thy God, that we die not: for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a king. 5. Job 34:37 For he addeth rebellion unto his sin, he clappeth his hands among us, and multiplieth his words against God. 6. Isaiah 29:1 Woe to Ariel, to Ariel, the city where David dwelt! add ye year to year; let them kill sacrifices. III. WE CAN'T DO 1. Matthew 6:27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? 2. Galatians 3:15 Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man's covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto. IV. WE NEED TO DO TO GROW. A. GROWING AS A CHRISTIAN 1. 2 Peter 1:5-9 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; (6) And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; (7) And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. (8) For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. (9) But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. 2. Proverbs 16:23 The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips. B. TO REAP BENEFITS - Proverbs 3:1-2 My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, (2) for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you. CONCLUSION: A.
