WE __________ TO __________. CONCLUSION: WHY SHOULD WE STUDY THE BIBLE? PART 1A - TO KNOW WHO GOD THE FATHER IS. INTRODUCTION A. DO YOU STUDY THE BIBLE? WHY? B. DO YOU STUDY OUT OF A FEELING OF DUTY? C. DO YOU STUDY BECAUSE THERE'S SOMETHING IN THERE YOU WANT TO KNOW? L.S. - WE SHOULD STUDY TO KNOW WHO . . . I. GOD THE FATHER IS. A. Declared by Nature 1. Psalm19:1 (Psa 19:1) The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork. 2. Romans 1:20 (Rom 1:20) For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, B. Exemplified in His Children 1. 1 John 4:7-8 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. (8) He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 2. 1 Corinthians 14:24-25 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all: 25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth. C. Identified by the Scriptures 1. Acts 17:23 for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you: 2. His Nature a. Eternal and Immortal - (1 Timothy 1:17) Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen. b. Omnipotent - (Genesis 17:1) And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. c. Omnipresent - (Psalms 139:7-12) Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? {8} If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. {9} If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; {10} Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. {11} If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. {12} Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee. d. Omniscient - (1 John 3:20) For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. e. Spiritual - (John 4:24) God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. f. Good - (Matthew 19:17) And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. g. Living - (Acts 14:13-15) Then the priest of Jupiter, which was before their city, brought oxen and garlands unto the gates, and would have done sacrifice with the people. {14} Which when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of, they rent their clothes, and ran in among the people, crying out, {15} And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein: 3. His Character a. Holiness - (Psalms 97:12) Rejoice in the LORD, ye righteous; and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness. b. Justice - (Isaiah 45:21) Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me. c. Mercy - (Psalms 103:8-13) The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. {9} He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever. {10} He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. {11} For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. {12} As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. {13} Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him. d. Love - (1 John 4:16) And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. e. Truth - (Psalms 89:14) Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face. 4. His Will - (1 Thessalonians 4:3-7) For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: {4} That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; {5} Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God: {6} That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified. {7} For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. 5. His Actions - (Deuteronomy 10:20-22) Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave, and swear by his name. {21} He is thy praise, and he is thy God, that hath done for thee these great and terrible things, which thine eyes have seen. {22} Thy fathers went down into Egypt with threescore and ten persons; and now the LORD thy God hath made thee as the stars of heaven for multitude. (Psalms 66:16) Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will declare what he hath done for my soul. D. Testified of by His Son 1. Matthew 11:27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. 2. John 8:19 Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also. E. Yearning to Save All 1. Ezekiel 33:11 Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel? 2. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. Galatians 4:8-9 Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods. (9) But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage? 1 John 2:13-14 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father. 14 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one. II. JESUS IS. III. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS IV. SATAN IS. V. WE ARE. A. Identified by the Scriptures D. Testified of by His Son E. Yearning to Save All II. JESUS IS. A. The Son of God - John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. B. God - John 1:1-5 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. C. Our Creator - Colossians 1:16-17 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: {17} And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. D. Our Savior - 1 John 2:2-5 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. E. Our Lord - John 13:12-15 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? {13} Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. {14} If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. {15} For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. F. Our King - 1 Timothy 6:14-16 That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: {15} Which in his times he shall show, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; {16} Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen. (Matthew 27:11) And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest. G. The Head of the Church - Colossians 1:17-18 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. {18} And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. H. The only Mediator between God and Man - 1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; I. The Christ, the Messiah - John 1:41 He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. Luke 9:18-20 And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am? 19 They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again. 20 He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God. J. Our Advocate - 1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: III. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS IV. SATAN IS. V. WE ARE. VI. WE OUGHT TO BE. SPOKEN OF OVER 350 TIMES 2. HAS MANY NAMES OR DESCRIPTIONS - Holy Spirit, Holy Ghost, Spirit of God Comforter, Counselor, Spirit of Truth, the Spirit, His Spirit, Spirit of Christ 3. KNOWABLE - MORE IGNORANCE AND SUPERSTITION EXIST REGARDING THE SPIRIT THAN MOST OTHER BIBLE SUBJECTS B. AN INDIVIDUAL, NOT A PRINCIPLE, INFLUENCE, OR FEELING 1. COMFORTING / COUNSELING = PERSONAL - (John 14:16-17) And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; {17} Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. (John 14:25-26) These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. {26} But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. 2. CAN BE LIED TO = PERSONAL (Acts 5:3-4) But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? {4} Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. 3. KNOWS, TEACHES, CHOOSES = PERSONAL - (1 Corinthians 2:10-13) But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. {11} For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. {12} Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. {13} Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. (1 Corinthians 12:11) But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. 4. COMMUNION (FELLOWSHIP) = PERSONAL (2 Corinthians 13:14) The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen. 5. CAPABLE OF GRIEF = PERSONAL - (Ephesians 4:30) And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. 6. SHOULD BE REFERRED TO & RELATED TO AS A PERSON C. A DIVINE MEMBER OF THE GODHEAD 1. OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH ALL THREE BEGINS AT BAPTISM (Matthew 28:19) Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: (2 Corinthians 13:14) The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen. 2. HOLY SPIRIT = SPIRIT OF GOD (1 Corinthians 2:10-13) But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. (Matthew 3:16-17) And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: {17} And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. (John 1:32-34) And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. {33} And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. {34} And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God. 3. A LIE TO THE HOLY SPIRIT = A LIE TO GOD (Acts 5:3-4) But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? {4} Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. D. CONSTANTLY AT WORK 1. PRESENT AT CREATION - (Genesis 1:2) And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. (Genesis 1:26) And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 2. ACCOMPLISHED THE INCARNATION (Matthew 1:18) Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. 3. SPREADS THE WORD OF GOD - (John 14:26) But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. (John 15:26-27) But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: {27} And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning. (John 16:7-14) Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. {8} And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: {9} Of sin, because they believe not on me; {10} Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; {11} Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. {12} I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. {13} Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come. {14} He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you. 4. CONFIRMED THE WORD THROUGH MIRACULOUS GIFTS. a. SPEAKING IN TONGUES - ACTS 2, 8, 10 b. HEALING - ACTS 4, 8 c. PROPHECY - O. T. 5. GUIDES CHRISTIANS a. MIRACULOUSLY IN 1ST CENTURY i. THROUGH APOSTLES ii. THROUGH DIRECT INVOLVEMENT iii. MIRACLES COULD BE ABUSED iv. MIRACLES HAD SPECIFIC PURPOSES b. THROUGH THE BIBLE NOW i. THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE BIBLE ARE NOT THE SAME THING ii. THE BIBLE IS A TOOL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (Ephesians 6:17) And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: E. NOT WHAT MANY PEOPLE THINK HE IS. 1. Can't be bought 2. Doesn't force against your will 3. Doesn't perform miracles today 4. Isn't a ghost IV. SATAN IS. V. WE ARE. VI. WE OUGHT TO BE. CONCLUSION: WHY SHOULD WE STUDY THE BIBLE? A REBEL AGAINST GOD - Revelation 12:7-11 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, 8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. 9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. 10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. 11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. Luke 10:17-18 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. 18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. 1 John 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. B. A LIAR AND MURDERER - John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. C. OUR ENEMY - 1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Matthew 13:38-39 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; 39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. 1. HE HINDERS GOOD - 1 Thessalonians 2:18 Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us. 2. HE PERSECUTES CHRISTIANS - 2 Corinthians 12:7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. 3. HE BINDS PEOPLE - Luke 13:16 And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day? 4. HE CORRUPTS PEOPLE - John 13:27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly. 5. HE KEEPS FAITH FROM DEVELOPING - Luke 8:12 Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. 6. HE WANTS TO DESTROY FAITH - Luke 22:31-32 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: 32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. 7. HE ACCUSES THE BRETHREN - Revelation 12:9-10 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. (10) And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. 8. HE TEMPTS - 1 Corinthians 7:5 Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency. 9. HE TRIES TO GET AN ADVANTAGE - 2 Corinthians 2:11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. 10. HE HAS THE POWER OF DEATH - Hebrews 2:14-15 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; (15) And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. 11. HE SNARES PEOPLE - 2 Timothy 2:26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will. 12. HE DECEIVES THE WORLD - 2 Corinthians 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Revelation 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. 13. HE SLANDERS THE RIGHTEOUS - Job 1:8-11 And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? (9) Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought? (10) Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. (11) But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face. Job 2:4-5 And Satan answered the Lord, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life. (5) But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face. 14. HE HAS BLINDED THE WORLD - 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: (4) In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. D. DESTINED FOR HELL - Matthew 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: V. WE ARE. VI. HE SLANDERS THE RIGHTEOUS - Job 1:8-11 & 2:4-5 14. HE HAS BLINDED THE WORLD - 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 D. DESTINED FOR HELL - Matthew 25:41 V. WE ARE. A. AS HUMAN BEINGS 1. CREATED IN GOD'S IMAGE, HIS OFFSPRING - Genesis 1:26-27 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. (27) So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. Acts 17:28-29 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. (29) Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device. 2. LOWER THAN THE ANGELS - Hebrews 2:6-8 But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him? (7) Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands: (8) Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him. 3. STEWARDS OVER THE EARTH - Genesis 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. 4. SINNERS IN NEED OF A SAVIOR - Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Romans 7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? 5. DUST - Psalms 103:14-16 For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust. (15) As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. (16) For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more. 6. UNCLEAN - Isaiah 64:4-8 For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him. {5} Thou meetest him that rejoiceth and worketh righteousness, those that remember thee in thy ways: behold, thou art wroth; for we have sinned: in those is continuance, and we shall be saved. {6} But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. {7} And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities. {8} But now, O Lord, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand. 7. DEAD SPIRITUALLY - Colossians 2:13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Romans 7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? 8. AS A SHADOW - Psalms 144:3-4 Lord, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! or the son of man, that thou makest account of him! (4) Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away. 9. DYING PHYSICALLY - Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: Romans 7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? GOD'S ADOPTED CHILDREN - Galatians 4:5-6 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. (6) And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Romans 8:16-17 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: (17) And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. 2. GOD'S SHEEP - Psalms 95:7 For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To day if ye will hear his voice, Psalms 100:3 Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. 3. UNPROFITABLE SERVANTS - Luke 17:7-10 But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat? (8) And will not rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward thou shalt eat and drink? (9) Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not. (10) So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do. 4. NOT UNDER THE LAW, DELIVERED - Romans 6:15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. Romans 7:6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter. 5. CONQUERORS - Romans 8:37-39 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. (38) For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, (39) Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. 6. THE LORD'S - Romans 14:7-8 For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. (8) For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's. 7. GOD'S LABORERS, CROPS AND BUILDING - 1 Corinthians 3:6-9 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. (7) So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. (8) Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. (9) For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building. 8. PARTAKERS OF CHRIST - 1 Corinthians 10:16-17 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? (17) For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread. Hebrews 3:14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end; 9. SAVOR OF CHRIST - 2 Corinthians 2:15-17 For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish: (16) To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things? (17) For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ. 10. AMBASSADORS FOR CHRIST - 2 Corinthians 5:20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. 11. HIS WORKMANSHIP - Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. 12. MEMBERS OF ONE ANOTHER - Ephesians 4:25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. 13. MEMBERS OF HIS BODY - Ephesians 5:30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. 14. THE CIRCUMCISION - Philippians 3:3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh. 15. WASHED, SANCTIFIED, JUSTIFIED - 1 Corinthians 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. 16. OF GOD - 1 John 4:6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. 1 John 5:19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness. 17. OF THE TRUTH - 1 John 3:19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. 18. IN HIM - 1 John 2:5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. 1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. 19. IN THE BOOK OF LIFE - Revelation 21:27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life. Luke 10:20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven. VI. WE OUGHT TO BE. OF GOD - 1 JOHN 4:6, 1 JOHN 5:19. 17. OF THE TRUTH - 1 JOHN 3:19 18. IN HIM - 1 JOHN 2:5, 1 JOHN 5:20 VI. WE OUGHT TO BE. A. OBEDIENT IN ALL THINGS BIG AND SMALL - Colossians 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. (Matthew 23:23) "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. (Luke 11:42) "But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass by justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. (1 John 2:6) He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked. B. HUMBLE - (Romans 12:3) For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. (1 Corinthians 8:2) And if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know. C. LOVING AND SERVING OTHERS - (1 John 4:11) Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. (John 13:14) "If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. (Romans 15:1) We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves. (2 Corinthians 2:7) so that, on the contrary, you ought rather to forgive and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up with too much sorrow. (Ephesians 5:28) So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. (1 John 3:16) By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. (3 John 1:8) We therefore ought to receive such, that we may become fellow workers for the truth. Galatians 5:13-14 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. {14} For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. D. SUBMISSIVE TO AUTHORITY- 1 PETER 2:13-15 Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; {14} Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. {15} For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: (Acts 5:29) But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: "We ought to obey God rather than men. (James 4:15) Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that." Hebrews 13:17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you. E. TEACHERS - (Hebrews 5:12) For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. (Ephesians 6:20) for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. (Colossians 4:4) that I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak. (Colossians 4:6) Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one. F. GOOD STEWARDS - (Matthew 25:27) 'So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest. 1 Corinthians 4:1-2 Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God. {2} Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful. 1 Peter 4:10 As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. G. FAITHFUL - LUKE 16:10-13 He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. {11} If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? {12} And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man's, who shall give you that which is your own? {13} No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. (2 Peter 3:11) Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, H. TRUE WORSHIPERS - John 4:20-24 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. {21} Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. {22} Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. {23} But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. {24} God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. I. STUDENTS - Matthew 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. (1 Thessalonians 4:1) Finally then, brethren, we urge and exhort in the Lord Jesus that you should abound more and more, just as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God; (2 Thessalonians 3:7) For you yourselves know how you ought to follow us, for we were not disorderly among you; (1 Timothy 3:15) but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. J. PRAYERFUL - (Luke 18:1) Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart, 1 Thessalonians 5:17 Pray without ceasing. CONCLUSION: WHY SHOULD WE STUDY THE BIBLE?
