What are we supposed to do?

My father used to say that in many churches the preacher does the work the elders should be doing, the elders do the work the deacons should be doing, and the deacons stand around wondering what in the world they are supposed to do. I think that is the case far too often, in fact, if that is happening in one congregation of the Lord's church it is too often. Deacons are an important part of God's plan for the church and we need more teaching on the Biblical doctrines of church organization and the variety of roles including deacons that need to be filled in every church.
